Individuals should feel empowered in their decisions and choices that they make in life.

I am looking forward to next May. I want my children to see me walk across the stage-in cap and gown-to receive my Occupational Therapy Assistant Degree. Hopefully, they will be proud of me and it will inspire them to go far in life. As an Occupational Therapy Assistant, I want to be able to help people and support them with any deficit or disability they may have. I will work with people to overcome or adapt to a physical disability or injury such as Multiple Sclerosis, spinal cord injury, broken bone, etc. Also, I may work with people who have a developmental disability or psychiatric disability. What I find most interesting or appealing about occupational therapy, is that it is not just about the disability, but how the disability affects the activities a person engages in. As an Occupational Therapy Assistant, how can I help the father with an arm injury still be able to perform his job so he can provide for his family. Another example is a grandmother who cooks "Sunday sauce" for the extended family. How can I help her continue to stir, open, lift pots, etc, even with her arthritis progressing. These are only a couple of examples of how occupational therapy helps people.

Since I enjoy exercise and physical activity, I may end up working as an Occupational Therapy Assistant in a nontraditional area of health and wellness. There are programs in the Western New York area helping people with disabilities enjoy bowling, baseball, exercise, and dance. There are programs for the elderly to keep them driving and living in their homes for as long as possible. I may be able to assist them in remaining independent and mobile in the community. I am very excited about my future. I don't know in which direction I will go as there are so many possibilities.

Personally, our family wants to go to Haliburton Forest and Wildlife Preserve in Canada to camp. They have a treetop canopy tour through the forest. They also have a wolf sanctuary. You watch the wolf pack in their natural habitat through a two-way mirror. There are so many places we want to vacation at-Yellowstone National Park, a Caribbean cruise, and the Costa Rican rainforest. I don't know how many of these destinations we will get to, but we will try. We will definitely go back to Siesta Key and Orlando, Florida. Siesta Key has the most beautiful beaches in the world. In Orlando, we went to Discovery Cove and swam with dolphins. It was truly an experience worth repeating as the dolphins were amazing.

I am also determined to start more Polish and Italian traditions that my husband and I experienced while growing up. If we don't keep these traditions alive now, they will die out. I hope to see my children grow and succeed in life no matter what path or paths they choose. I want them to be happy in life. If they aren't happy, I want them to have the courage to change and move in another direction.
